In 1896, on the day following Janmashtami, His Divine Grace, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada was born in Calcutta, India. In the Vaishnava calendar, this day is also known as Nandotsava: the day that Nanda Maharaja, Krishna’s father, prepared a grand festival to celebrate the birth of his son.
As founder-acarya of ISKCON, Srila Prabhupada plays a central role in the life of all ISKCON devotees. Everyone connected to ISKCON knows that without Srila Prabhupada’s courage and his unmotivated love and compassion all the residents of the world, we would not have had the opportunity to intimately serve Krishna in such a favourable environment as exists within ISKCON. Although ISKCON devotees have started accepting a spiritual master of their choice after the disappearance of Srila Prabhupada, Srila Prabhupada still remains the guru of everyone.
In Mauritius, the worship of Srila Prabhupada on this very special day begins with kirtan at 11 a.m. Devotees then express their love and appreciation for Srila Prabhupada. Some temples bind the written homage of devotees in a book which is then offered to Srila Prabhupada. The glorification is followed by abhishek and the offering of a big cake and a wide variety of special food preparations to Srila Prabhupada. The festival ends with arati and at about 3 p.m, a sumptuous feast is served to all those present.

En tan sólo doce años, a pesar de su edad avanzada, Srila Prabhupada circumbaló el globo catorce veces; dictó conferencias en los seis continentes y a pesar de tan vigoroso programa continuaba levantándose horas antes de la madrugada cada día para traducir los textos védicos al inglés. Sus escritos constituyen una verdadera biblioteca de la filosofía, religión, literatura y cultura védicas.
Hasta el momento de su partida de este mundo el 14 de noviembre de 1977, Srila Prabhupada guió a ISKCON y lo vió crecer hasta el punto de llegar a ser una organización mundial con más de cien Templos, escuelas, asramas, institutos y comunidades agrícolas.
